ASSESSMENTS OF READING COMPREHENSION: DIFFERENT MEASURES, DIFFERENT EXPLANATORY VARIABLES AND ACHIEVEMENT
LUISA ARAUJO,JOSé MORAIS,ARMANDA COSTA
L1 Educational Studies in Language and Literature , 2013,
Abstract: This study investigates the reading achievement of 69 Portuguese fourth graders on national (NA) and international (PIRLS) assessments and its relation to reading skills in the following areas: phonological awareness, word recognition, fluency, accuracy, and types of oral reading errors. Data analysis was conducted using regression and t-tests for dependent samples. Results indicate that in the NA reading accuracy and vocabulary knowledge predict reading comprehension. In PIRLS, vocabulary knowledge and non-meaning changing errors explain the variance in reading scores. Performance in the NA was significantly higher than in PIRLS and, in this test, students scored significantly lower on questions that require interpreting and evaluating text than on literal questions. Differences in test design and implications for monitoring educational outcomes are discussed.
Vocabulary of Emotions Test (VET): A Cross-cultural Validation in Portuguese and Croatian Contexts

Psychological Topics , 2011,
Abstract: This article discusses the adaptation and cross-cultural validation of the Vocabulary of Emotions Test (VET) in the Portuguese and Croatian contexts, an Emotional Intelligence ability measure with 35 items, which assesses individual's ability to understand emotion. Based on Mayer and Salovey's (1997) theoretical framework of emotional intelligence, VET was originally developed in Croatian academic settings by Tak i , Haramba i and Velemir (2003). This study involved 1119 secondary school students, 682 Portuguese and 437 Croatian, attending different grades and courses. Overall, in both Croatian (original version) and Portuguese (adapted version) contexts, VET evidenced good psychometric properties particularly concerning sensibility, difficulty item analysis and reliability, although slightly better indicators were found in the Croatian original version. Moreover, cultural and gender differences were found, benefiting Portuguese students and girls.

Pediatric Reports , 2011, DOI: 10.4081/pr.2011.e21
Abstract: Prospective studies concerning liver disease in pediatric cystic fibrosis patients are scarce. The present study aimed to describe the prevalence and clinical expression of cystic fibrosis - related liver disease, in a cohort of 62 pediatric patients. Descriptive study, resulting from the prospective evaluation, between 1994 and 2009, of 62 pediatric patients (age <18 years) with cystic fibrosis. The follow-up protocol included a clinical assessment every 2 months, liver function tests every 6 months and annual liver ultrasonography. The cumulative prevalence of liver disease was 11.2% (7/62 cases). All patients had ΔF508 mutation and pancreatic insufficiency, none had meconium ileus. The liver involvement became clinically evident at a mean age of 8 years (3-15 years), revealed by hepatomegaly or hepatosplenomegaly (3 cases) and/ or abnormalities of liver function tests (3 cases) changes of liver ultrasound (7 cases) with evidence of portal hypertension (2 cases). Four patients were submitted to liver biopsy; biliary fibrosis was documented in one case, focal biliary cirrhosis in 2 cases and multilobular cirrhosis in another case. Within a median 11.6 years follow-up period (all patients under UDCA therapy after liver disease diagnosis), progression of liver disease was observed in 2 patients; one patient developed refractory variceal bleeding and progressive hepatic failure, requiring liver transplant. The results of the present study agree with those of previous pediatric studies, further documenting clinical expression of liver disease in CF patients, which is usually detected in the first decade of life and emphasize the contribution of ultrasound to early diagnosis of liver involvement. Moreover, although advanced liver disease is a relatively rare event, early isolated liver transplantation may have to be considered at this age group.
(In)Visibilidade do género na sexualidade juvenil: propostas para uma nova concep??o sobre a educa??o sexual e a preven??o de comportamentos sexuais de risco

Pro-Posi??es , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73072008000200006
Abstract: in this article we intend to show how gender is a determining and indispensable concept when juvenile sexual issues are discussed; particularly when we approach the adolescent female sexuality. the feminist literature has been alerting us for the discourse on victimization, fear and morality which, in many cases and in many countries, still justifies contents of sexual education programs in schools and campaigns for prevention against sexually transmissible diseases, especially hiv. however, after analyzing those speeches, it is very clear that they lack an emancipatory discourse about adolescent feminine sexuality. in spite of the hiv epidemic and the growing number of heterosexual women (of all age groups, from the youngest to the oldest) being infected, which calls for much greater attention on the matter, that problem must not justify regulatory and traditional discourses on feminine sexuality. there is a need for new emancipatory and empowering female adolescent discourses, as well as young men's commitment regarding reproduction issues and involvement in the construction of an equalitarian project. and also, programs and campaigns informed by the existing knowledge related to gender issues and the asymmetry between the sexes in experiencing sexuality.

Processing and Application of Ceramics , 2009,
Abstract: BNBT (0.94[(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3]-0.06BaTiO3) nanopowders were prepared starting from an aqueous solution of inorganic salts (barium acetate, bismuth nitrate, sodium nitrate and titanium isopropoxide) either by the citrate-nitrate sol-gel combustion (SGC) or by spray drying (SD). Their chemical and microstructural properties were compared with the ones of the same system obtained by mechanical mixing of oxides (SSCO). The SD and SGC powders require temperatures 150 and 300°C lower than SSCO powder to form the perovskite phase. The chemical and physical properties of the obtained powders strongly depend on the considered chemical route. Therefore the subsequent sintering step and consequently the microstructure of the obtained ceramics differ significantly. The microstructures as well the piezoelectric properties of the sintered SGC, SD, SSCO samples are investigated and a critical comparison is presented.
Arising Student Consciousness Regarding Structural Properties of Natural Materials with a Structural Challenge Employing Arundo Donax  [PDF]
Luisa Molari
Creative Education (CE) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2019.106087
Abstract: All our actions claim now sustainable choices, and radical changes in materials need to be made. In this perspective there is the awareness that nature can help?to?provide?viable solutions. In particular, the choice of natural materials for structures, perfectly optimized by the structural point of view, can be made. In this paper an experimental teaching experience regarding the structural behaviour of Arundo Donaxreed, made in a Structural course of?DesignoftheIndustrialProduct?of the University of Bologna, is reported. Arundo Donax has been firstly characterized from the mechanical point of view and then used in a structural challenge focusing on the best use of a given quantity of reed for a “bridge type structure” with fixed span and width. The main goals of the course were, on one hand (with mechanical characterization of Arundo), to give students sensitiveness on strength and stiffness of the material, on the other (with the structural challenge) were?to make the student think about the combination of material properties and shape of constructions to reach the best structural performances.

Abstract: The purpose of this article?was?to present the results and discussions of an action research developed by teachers and high school students in a public school in the Sobral-CE municipality, Brazil’s semi-arid region, where they elaborated and developed an interdisciplinary project aiming to seek the development of new sustainable methods and technologies for the treatment and reuse of domestic effluents and also to avoid wasting drip-treated water on school taps, drinking fountains, sinks and air-conditioning units. The starting point for the project was the group’s concern about the wastefulness observed in the school environment and the awareness of issues related to the limitations of access to water by humanity in recent times. Thus, the main purpose of this project was the development of a practical environmental education capable of contributing effectively to the living conditions improvement in the semi-arid environment, based on the case study, having the school space as a research laboratory, proposing new educational challenges for teachers and learners in the another posture constitution of the same in relation to nature and its resources;?based on the study of concrete cases of the daily life of said actors, thus fostering students’ interest in scientific research. To do so, it started with TGS as the main methodological resource, whose course followed the steps of a quantitative research, whose results ratified the project initial hypotheses, showing that itwas?possible to develop an interdisciplinary environmental education in a practical and attractive way for students from simple ideas and to insert the student in the universe of scientific research still in basic education.
